What you should know before getting one and where to find one

When it comes to Golden Retrievers, it’s hard to go wrong.  Here’s some basic information and education about the breed one might want to know before owning one.  Also check out more information about the breed at the Golden Retriever Club of America

What are the characteristics of a golden retriever?

The Golden Retrievers are known for their friendly temperament, intelligence, trainability, obedience and medium size which makes them ideal for a number of personal or service dog uses.  Everything from personal hunting dog, guide dog for the blind, service dog, search and rescue, tracking, or just great all around family pet.

Golden Retriever

  1. Hips – a report from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) or PennHIP at 24 months of age or older. 
  2. Elbows – a report from the OFA at 24 months of age or older.
  3. Heart – a report from a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology), at 12 months of age or older.
  4. Eyes – a report from a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology. Examinations should be done within 12 months prior to a breeding, and results should be recorded in an approved online database as described above.
    • Dogs that produce offspring should continue to have ophthalmology examinations on a yearly basis for their lifetime, and if the findings permit recertification, the results should continue to be recorded in an approved online database.
  5. DNA Test – a DNA test for (prcd-PRA, GR-PRA1, and ichthyosis) is recommended, and a DNA test for NCL is Highly Recommended
