What you should know before getting one and where to find one

People all over the world own poodles, and may own them for the fact that they’re three different size poodles.  The three sizes are Standard, Miniature, and Toy Poodles.  Here’s some more basic information and education about the breed one might want to know before owning one.  Also check out more information about the breed at The Poodle Club of America website.

What are the characteristics of a Poodle?

Poodles are known for their outgoing, intelligent nature, eagerness to please, trainability, and multiple sizes which makes them ideal for a number of people.  They were breed to be hunting dogs so they like to stay active and be of use to their owners.  Whether it be for retrieving, or just a family pet.

Standard Poodle

  1. Hips – A evaluation from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) or from PennHIP
  2. Eyes – Eye Examination by an American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ACVO) Ophthalmologist
  3. Health Elective (One of the following tests)

Miniature Poodle

  1. Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) DNA Test – A DNA based test from an approved laboratory.
  2. Eyes – Eye Examination by an American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ACVO) Ophthalmologist
  3. Patellar Luxation (Min Age 1 Year) – A evaluation from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA)
  4. Hips – A evaluation from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) or from PennHIP

Toy Poodle

  1. Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) DNA Test – A DNA based test from an approved laboratory.
  2. Eyes – Eye Examination by an American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ACVO) Ophthalmologist
  3. Patellar Luxation (Min Age 1 Year) – A evaluation from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA)

Temperament  –  Outgoing

Trainability  –  Excellent

Average Life Span  –  10-18 years

Energy Level  –  Slightly Above Average

Attention Needs  –  Medium

Shedding  –  Very Little

Average weight  –  40-70 lbs

Exercise Needs  –  Above Average
